The Story

William Shakespeare left Stratford-upon-Avon for London and became an actor, playwright and part owner of his company and its theatre, the Globe. Writing for crowds who stood in the yard and heckled, he produced around 37 plays and over 150 sonnets, from Hamlet and Macbeth to Romeo and Juliet. He gave English hundreds of words and phrases we still use. Four hundred years on, his plays are performed somewhere in the world every day.
